Rebreather - Game Jam

Rebreather was part of the thatgamecompany x Coreblazer 2025 game jam featuring the theme: Generosity. The jam was 3 weeks long, with teams no larger than 4. I took charge of the art department with our other artist, June Enriquez. She created wonderful bikes and unbroken sentries, one of which I used to create the defective one shown in the gameplay. We had one UI artist, who also created our end game cinematics, Valia Cabello. Of course nothing would have been functional without our programmer Julian Quinn.

I created the characters, creatures and environments, as well as remaining vehicles/props, and materials. The moving assets were rigged in Maya and hand animated with the exception of the main character. The main characters animations were made using the ALS Locomotion system and physics.

Crashed on an alien world, with an unconscious crew member and only a single working oxygen tank between you. Do you help them? Do you save yourself? How will you navigate the challenges that await you to get back to home base? Every choice matters in this compelling, multiple ending, sidescroller game.

Use of Theme:
We see generosity as an action you take for another, that has no benefit to you. And often times that action is at a cost to yourself. By giving up your oxygen and dragging this unconscious person through the game you are putting in a lot of effort towards an NPC with no known connection to you, you do it because it is the kind and generous thing to do. The game will not reward you for it, nor will it punish you should you choose to leave them; beyond unlocking different endings.

I wanted the game to be meaningful and enjoyable with ambient backgrounds and simple gameplay. The surprise endings add a layer of depth to the events within the game. I was definitely inspired by Somerville and the cinematic quality of the game. I would love to see it polished and expanded upon but the beauty of a short jam is all in the contraints.
